"The National Road Commemorative Pictorial History" is a concise history of our 'first national highway.' The highway, which is now part of U.S. Route 40, ran from Cumberland, Maryland, to Vandalia, Illinois. Its history is illustrated in this commemorative book by more than 100 photos of old taverns and inns, stagecoach stops, villages, stately homes, log and stone structures, landmark bridges, public buildings, and much more. Many of these landmarks are preserved and can be visited today - other passed into memory long ago. The volume's cover illustration is by the internationally acclaimed artist, Jim Willis. |
